My dentist is awesome. This morning he gave me a new filling and replaced an old one. He only gave me a needle for the replacement, and he was so good with the needle that it almost felt good. I was in and out of his office in 30 minutes.
I also got a sexy new bite guard. I'm supposed to wear it at night. This I do not understand. Why should I wear a bite guard at night when I only grind my teeth at work, during the day?

If your bite guard is anything like mine, you can wear it during the day - just don't try to talk. You know what kids sound like when they've got a new retainer, and everything's a little muffled and lisped and crackly? That's what a grown-up sounds like trying to talk while wearing a bite guard, in my experience.
Oooh. You didn't get tricked into buying the one from the dentist, did you? Because the same things are available at drugstores for about $15!
Did he show you the nasty pictures of people that have teeth that are falling apart because they grind their teeth?
@Dustin, I did get the custom-fitted one from the dentist. I tried the drug store ones a few years ago (actually, it was from a sporting-goods store), and it was too bulky. I drooled all the time and it was very uncomfortable.
You need to get a customized one that SAYS something. When students piss you off, you can peel back your lips in a shark-like smile and they can read your teeth: "BUGGER OFF."
I was surprised to learn that "tooth-grinding" includes merely clenching your jaw muscles. If it weren't for clenching my jaw, I wouldn't get any exercise at all...
I thought I didn't grind mine at night, either...until I woke up to the sound of my jaw pop-pop-popping very grossly in the night. BLEH.
I clench and grind mine during the day, and often don't even notice it. I guess I need more exercise. And you've given me a new idea for a post. Thanks, AP!
Because otherwise you couldn't talk. Those things belong in the NFL.
This is so late, but I have to tell you as a fellow teeth-clencher -- do wear your bite guard at night. You are almost certainly grinding your teeth in your sleep, and I am within millimeters of needing to have crowns on half my teeth because I have worn so much of the enamel away with clenching. And don't wear a soft one -- it can pull your teeth out over time.
Thanks for writing your blog.
