When your whole life falls apart, you have options. For example, you can call the director of your favorite funding agency and tell him or her how bad things suck for you, and sometimes you will get a two-week extension on a grant deadline.
This can be especially comforting after your child throws up on you for the third time at 3:00 am on a Monday morning.
I must remember this warm, fuzzy feeling I have for my director right now the next time a student asks me for a homework extension.
