- If you are retired, you do not get to serve on search committees.
- If you know you are leaving the university, you do not get to serve on search committees.
- If you are retired or leaving the university, you do not get a vote in hiring decisions.
- You cannot inflict someone on the rest of us if you will not suffer the consequences along with the rest of us.

Hahahaaaaaa! Oh, yes! Amen!
If only retiring faculty felt that way...
wait..... are you in my department?
Conversely, if you are tenure-track and they decide to "protect" you from serving on x or y committee, start searching for a new post elsewhere!
Rethoryke : I wish someone had mentioned that a few years ago. I could have started my search for a new position sooner. :(
Hell, even if you're NOT tenure-track and they "protect" you from srving on a certain committee, that's your cue to GTFO! (Happened to me...should've seen the writing on the wall...)
Some of the best reasons for retiring
Nor do you get to deny everyone a valuable resource just because you will miss that resource.
I love teaching but . . . cannot imagine doing it full time for a university! I have so many college profs as friends and not one of them sounds deliriously happy with their gigs!
Cannot imagine stomaching the politics!
You are NOT ageist! no, not you
Hoping you and yours are okay.
Just noticed this blog again in the great migration from Google Reader. I hope you're still around somewhere, doing interesting things.
Angry Prof, I hope you're all right and doing well. You don't have to published this comment; I just wanted to say hello, and that I've been thinking of you. I've also (finally!) put my real name on E&P and redirected readers to my new real-world website. These days, I work as a freelance writer & photographer, and hope to have my creative nonfiction novel complete by the end of 2016.
Lots of love to you and yours... <3
