This woman stopped in again this afternoon, at a moment when I had foolishly left my door open.
She came to report that, because she just didn't get the material covered in the homework (power), she was not going to turn in the assignment. (It was due this morning, so that was already a fait accompli.) Did I, she asked, think that would be ok?
I shrugged, said it was really up to her (it wasn't, at that point, but I saw no need to call her attention to that fact), and observed that of course she was going to have to master the material eventually as it was going to be covered on the exam.
She looked disappointed. As if she had expected me to cut out a third of the exam because she couldn't understand it.

I get the same thing with students who don't hand in the paper that they've known about all semester because they don't know how to use a certain kind of database in the library. They actually say, "I don't know how to find sources, I've never written a research paper before." And these kids are in COLLEGE!!!
And when these kids finally hand in their papers, with sources like "Shiny Happy Communication Term Paper Site" and the latest Jeff Foxworthy special, they wonder why they get that D-. But I worked reeeallly hard on this!!! they cry, but by then, there's nothing I can do.
Happy weekend!
