Fun during office hours.

The second statistics midterm will cover confidence intervals and power. Today in my office hours, Ms. D. says, "I really don't understand confidence intervals." So I explain them to her again. I feel good; I've helped her.

Then she says, "I don't understand power." I feel bad; I don't have any time left and I have another appointment.

Then she says, "I haven't read any of the assignments, and I haven't looked at the online notes." (No, I swear, she really did say it just like that!)

Well, let's just say I don't feel bad any more.

Before you help anyone at your office hours, you should make it a practice to ask them if they have done the assignments and the reading. That way, you can weed out the moochers.

Umm, I teach 7th graders. The FIRST thing I ask when they ask for help is to see the notes they are REQUIRED to take on all reading assignments . . .

Good suggestions, BUT...

What do these students expect the teacher to do--drill a hole in their head and pour it in with a funnel?

I think they're looking for something more like the Vulcan mind-meld.

I think they want either the Vulcan mind meld or the actual question (or, preferably, answer) that will be on the test!
This reminds me of the people who, even after you post the syllabus, lecture notes and study guides on Blackboard say, "Did I miss anything last time?"
Cheers!
