Your immense ego is putting pressure on what little brain you have left.

Dear Colleagues,

We have been given some options. Our job is to rank-order them. In the next few months we will have lots of opportunities to fight bitterly over them.

Do you really want to begin this process by fighting over the ranking system? Does the difference between a "0" and a "N/A" mean that much to you? Go ahead, then; you pick. And then go home and yell at your kids.

Cheers,
Angry Professor

In my department, new faculty are realizing that the "points" system [i.e., if you get X points, you qualify for X load next year] for determining who gets a particular course load is really a "ranking" system [i.e., if your colleagues all publish books, it does not matter how many presentations or articles you have produced, and we don't announce who has accomplished what, so you'll never know whether you've got a genuine chance at that 3-3 course load]. And there's nothing like being recommended for merit pay when everyone's being put on furloughs....so there's no chance of merit pay being available.

But- um, isn't the people from your area who usually bring up these sorts of scaling issues?

Well, if your sorting algorithm can't be customized to show N/A at the beginning or end of a numeric list, then I suppose you could get your drawers in a twist.

Or some of your colleagues could just be bombastic blowhards with bilge for brains. Alliteration rocks!

In my department, we have meetings to itemize the complaints we will debate during the official meetings. That is, we have meetings about the meetings.

Ahem. "Meeting" is a negatively-charged word at my uni. We have "hubs of understanding."

Sometimes we get together to complain. No, I mean, "we dialogue in an effort to purge ill-will and counterproductivity."
